Joseph Emerson is a faculty member at the Institute of Quantum Computing and the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo in Canada. He is an expert on the practical implementation of quantum computing. Emerson has proposed many of the current standard methods of quantum error characterization and quantum error suppression, including randomized benchmarking protocols and randomized compiling. He obtained his BSc in physics at McGill University, Canada, followed by a master’s degree in experimental nuclear physics and a PhD in theoretical physics, both from Simon Fraser University, Canada. After his PhD, he held postdoctoral positions at MIT and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics, Canada. He was also CEO and founder of the start-up Quantum Benchmark.
