James K. Thompson earned his PhD on single-ion mass measurements from MIT in 2003. He then did his postdoctoral work on quantum memories at the MIT–Harvard Center for Ultracold Atoms. He joined JILA, NIST, and the Department of Physics at the University of Colorado Boulder in 2006. His research focuses on cavity quantum electrodynamics using laser-cooled rubidium and strontium atoms for quantum sensing and simulation. Example topics include the generation of highly entangled states, superradiant lasers, dynamical phases of Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductors, nonclassical light generation, optical clocks, and matter-wave interferometry. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society.
